As ZIMMER AUSTRIA marks its 150th anniversary, the company continues to lead the textile machinery industry with its innovative solutions and commitment to excellence. In an exclusive interview with Mr. Andreas Rass, Managing Director of ZIMMER AUSTRIA, we delve into the company’s rich history, its current market strategies, and its vision for the future.
A Rich History of Innovation
ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s legacy is rooted in innovation and resilience. Originating from Bohemia in the Czech Republic, the family shifted to textile machinery early on. During World War II, they relocated to Kufstein, Austria, and established their first factory. This move, amid the backdrop of the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s dissolution after World War I, highlights the 150-year history of ZIMMER AUSTRIA.
ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s pioneering spirit led to significant breakthroughs in screen printing. In the early 1950s, they developed the magnetic application system, which became the foundation for the successful duplex flatbed printing system. This system was later integrated into conventional flatbed printing and, from 1954 onwards, became part of the rotary screen-printing revolution. By the early 1980s, they were among the first to explore and operate digital printers.
Digital Printing: Sustainability and Efficiency
Digital printing has been a cornerstone of ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s success, particularly in carpet printing. “Our focus on digital carpet printing remains a strong argument for customers to choose ZIMMER. Additionally, we have a robust market presence in rotary screen printing and coating machinery.”
The competitive landscape has evolved, but ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s commitment to quality, engineering excellence, and superior service continues to drive their success. “Our DNA includes seeking new opportunities and applications. Our focus on quality, engineering, and service sets us apart. We have service technicians in several countries and large warehouses for spare parts.”
Sustainability is also a key consideration. “Digital printing is inherently sustainable due to its on-demand nature, minimizing excess production. However, we continuously strive to make processes like fixation and washing more efficient. Our partnerships with ink manufacturers are crucial in achieving these sustainability goals.”
The Future of Digital Printing
Looking ahead, Andreas Rass highlighted the potential and challenges of digital printing. “Digital printing is highly competitive and can surpass screen printing in some areas. However, due to ink costs, it is typically limited to shorter runs. For longer runs exceeding a thousand meters, screen printing remains more cost-effective. Additionally, carpets are not printed with pigments. Home textiles, like velour and terry towels, also have limitations that prevent complete coverage by pigments”.
ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s market position and pricing strategy reflect their commitment to quality and specialization. “We may not be the cheapest, but customers come to us for special requests. Our offerings like the COLARIS piezo printer and the CHROMOJET valve printer cater to specific needs, such as bus seating and airplane carpets.”
Commitment to Innovation and Market Expansion
ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s dedication to research and development ensures their continued market leadership. “Our R&D center focuses on process development and industrial scaling, helping us stay ahead of the competition. We aim to strengthen our market presence and explore new opportunities where our technology can make an impact.”
In closing, Andreas Rass underscored the collective effort behind ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s success. “It’s the people who build the machines that are at the center of our achievements. We will continue to innovate and explore new segments to maintain our leadership in the textile machinery industry.”
ZIMMER AUSTRIA’s journey from its humble beginnings to a global leader in textile machinery and digital printing exemplifies their unwavering commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction. As they navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future, their focus on sustainability and technological advancement will undoubtedly keep them at the forefront of the industry.
