Successful partnership with COTTON USA
Going into details about association between the company and U.S. cotton, Mr. Ilavarasu said:” 75% of our annual fibre consumption is cotton & balance plant based natural fibres (flax, hemp, soya & cellulosic fibres). We have been using COTTON USA & Supima since 2012. Zero contamination and a wide range of cotton fibres suitable for both coarser and finer counts, permanent bale marking and bale -to -bale HVI report were the main triggers to start importing from COTTON USA.”
Sharing his experience of using U.S. cotton over the years, in terms of quality, delivery and service, as well as the advantage gained by SAA in the global market offering yarn manufactured using U.S. cotton, Mr. Ilavarasu observed:” COTTON USA & Supima have been working with mills, garmenters and retailers continuously. They are arranging buyer seller meet every year directly with garmenters & retailers and help us network, as well as market our products directly. We have gained immensely in securing reputed buyers through these arrangements. Every year, they also conduct the seminars at Coimbatore to address our concerns and requirement if any, on technical, commercial issues.”
“Additionally they also arranged mill visit for technical & quality Heads of Licensee Mills across various Asian countries to bench mark on the best practices. They have now partnered with CU, and have launched trust protocol to promote & enhance sustainability & traceability of COTTON USA. Their partnership with Oritain is one such initiative for Supima. They also work with CI at macro level to enhance the market share of cotton fibres vis-a–vis MMF by focusing on new product innovations & blends with other natural fibres,” he added.
Mr. Ilavarasu mentioned about an exciting new initiative from the company with a U.S cotton connect. “We have now started producing cotton balls & pads using Supima cotton for sale to the cosmetic industry in USA. Such forays into untreaded segments will bring awareness to the end- consumers on the superiority of COTTON USA and Supima cotton.
COVID Impact
According to Mr. Ilavarasu the Covid-19 pandemic really caused worldwide disturbance to entire supply chain in textiles. Sharing his views on how things are playing out in terms of cotton sourcing trends, he mentioned: “Post Covid-19, we are witnessing a great demand for home textiles & health care wares. The high priced value added yarns though might face resistance on short term, eventually the demand will perk up. “COTTON USA”s mainstay of zero contamination, trust cotton protocol guaranteeing sustainability & traceability will definitely fetch premium to the spinner by partnering with brands.”
Mr. Ilavarasu felt that post Covid-19 pandemic general public awareness in health and hygiene products has increased, which in turn has resulted in more enquiries from SAA’s customers for sustainable products.
When asked how does he see cotton consumption in the future looking at the challenges due to Covid and which categories in the company’s product mix does he foresee consumption of U.S cotton, Mr. Ilavarasu stated that the consumption and mill usage is bound to surge primarily due to increase in usage of knit apparel (suited to WFH). Additionally he felt that in the case of white & light colours, the garmenters have no other choice but to use machine picked contamination free cotton.
