Plan to train 15 lakh youth for textile sector by 2017
A tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed by the Ministry of Textiles, the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the National Textile Corporation (NTC) to set up a technology centre (tool room) in Kanpur.
Under the MoU, the Ministry of MSME will fund the project, while NTC will provide the land in a closed mill. Management will be through a governing council in which the Development Commissioner, MSME, will be the Chairman.
The proposed Technology Centre will provide skilling of youth in the textile sector, to ensure the requisite skilled manpower. It will also provide support for manufacturing of quality tools that would improve productivity of MSMEs and enable them to become competitive in national and international markets, as well as trained manpower and consultancy in related areas. The centre would be immensely beneficial to NTC as well, with its plan for modernization and expansion.
Drawing inspiration from the vision of the Prime Minister for ‘Skill India’, the Ministry of Textiles, through its Integrated Skill Development Scheme (ISDS), targets training of 15 lakh youth in the textile sector by 2017. It is exploring several alternatives to achieve this target.
The MoU with the Ministry of MSME is one such promotional initiative in this direction.
