TANTU is the alumni association (North India chapter) of two textile colleges of West Bengal. TANTU announces its fifth annual seminar on “Performance Textiles: Athleisure and Active Sportswear” to be held at India International Center, Max Muller Marg, New Delhi on 16th September 2017.
On one hand increased mass-interest in active sports and outdoor leisure activities such as running, sailing, climbing, cycling, etc. has led to immense growth in the consumption of textile materials in manufacturing of active sports related goods and equipment. On the other hand increasing disposable income and a surge in female participation in sports are the major factors driving the growth of the world sports apparels market.
The performance sports apparel market is expected to generate revenue of $184.6 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 4.3% during 2015-2020. According to research by Morgan Stanley, the athleisure sector has seen a huge increase of 42% over the last seven years, and is now worth over $270bn globally. Not only that, but athleisure is also predicted to grow another 30% by 2020, especially in Asia and the US. According to The NPD Group, US activewear apparel sales totalled US $ 45.9 billion in 2016, up 11% from last year and far outperforming the traditional apparel sector overall.
According to Euromonitor report, from 2015-16, the Indian sportswear market grew 22%, outpacing the segment’s global increase of 7%. By 2020, it is expected to grow an additional 12% CAGR with sales expected to reach US $ 8 billion. By 2018 Asia Pacific would emerge as the largest sports apparel market. While most of the international brands are already present in India, Indian start-up brands have already made their mark. To discuss on challenges and India’s preparedness in this segment this year’s TANTU seminar on “Performance Textiles” will focus on Athleisure and Active Sportswear.
The TANTU seminar format sans the usual speaker presentation and rather there will be two panel discussions by national and international experts from the field. The keynote address by Ram Sareen will elucidate the dynamic world market and what India should do. The attraction of the seminar will be the high profile panel discussion on “Manufacturing Challenges” and “Markets and Opportunities”, which will present who’s who of Athleisure and Active Sportswear from India and abroad on stage.
