The Government of India and Export Promotion Councils deserve immense appreciation for creating such a dynamic platform. We are proud to be part of this event and are eager to leverage it as an opportunity to accelerate our growth journey.”
Recent milestone
Shiva Texyarn had recently announced a significant milestone by securing a major order from the Indian Air Force. When asked about this achievement Dr. Sundararaman shared, “Yes, we recently secured two key orders from the Indian Air Force. One involves the supply of NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) protective suits, and the other one is for haversacks which is a complementary product to the suits. These products are part of our long-standing expertise in defence garmenting. For over a decade, we’ve been a trusted supplier of NBC gear to the Indian Armed Forces, working closely with DRDO technology.”

Evolution over the years
Shiva Texyarn has undergone remarkable evolution over the years. Reflecting on this journey, he said,” Shiva Texyarn began as a cotton spinning company but has since transformed into a leader in technical textiles. Our focus now is on coating, lamination, and garmenting, with a strong emphasis on defence and specialized textiles. We are proud to be the largest supplier of extreme cold-weather clothing systems for the Indian Army and a pioneer in NBC protective suits.”
The company’s product range includes:-
- Defense-focused products like extreme cold-weather clothing, NBC suits, and haversacks.
- Customizable technical fabrics for civilian use, such as digitally printable wallpapers and high-absorbent microfiber textiles.
- Consumer apparel through our brands: ‘Coppersmith’, a women’s fashion line, and ‘Brullen’, an outerwear range.
“Globally, we serve markets across Japan, the US, Middle East, Europe, and India, with products tailored for both defense and civilian applications,” Dr. Sundararaman added.

Innovation focus
Shiva Texyarn has always been known for its strong innovation focus. Highlighting some of the recent technological achievements of the company, Dr. Sundararaman said,” Innovation is integral to what we do. Some of our key breakthroughs include:
- Breathable Waterproof Coatings: Industry-leading technology using water-soluble chemistry.
- Activated Carbon Layers: Critical for NBC garments, produced with advanced lamination techniques.
- Digitally Printable Materials: Custom wallpapers and textiles with high-quality sublimation printing.
- Specialized Microfiber Fabrics: High absorbency for applications in outerwear, towels, and T-shirts.
These innovations stem from our in-house capabilities, which include coating, lamination, and fabric formation, enabling us to create unique solutions.”

Expanding product portfolio
While defence remains a significant part of Shiva Texyarn’s business, the company is now actively expanding into civilian markets. Elaborating on the same he said, “Our brands, Coppersmith and Brullen, reflect this diversification, offering stylish yet functional garments. Additionally, we continue to innovate in technical textiles for industries beyond defense, ensuring a broad market reach.”
Recent investments
The company has recently invested in a state-of-the-art machine for manufacturing outerwear and jacket shells, featuring sophisticated seam-sealing capabilities. “Additionally, we’ve enhanced our production of pile fabrics with new raising and shearing machines. We’re also expanding our capabilities in MMF (man-made fiber) fabric production through consistent investments. These advancements align with our commitment to innovation and capacity building,” Dr. Sundararaman stated.

Future plans
When queried about the future direction of the company Dr. Sundararaman said, “We aim to maintain our leadership in technical textiles while broadening our global presence. Our focus will remain on innovation, sustainability, and delivering cutting-edge products for both defense and civilian markets.” “While the spinning industry has been relatively muted, our other business segments have performed exceptionally well. Our defense order books are robust, with commitments extending until March of the next year. This steady growth reflects our strategic focus on high-value, specialized markets,” he said.
Optimistic outlook
Sharing his outlook for the Indian textile and technical textile industry, Dr. Sundaraman said, “The Indian textile market is largely driven by domestic consumption, which has grown significantly in volume and sophistication. While India exports around $40 billion in textiles annually, domestic consumption exceeds $100 billion. Shiva Texyarn is leveraging this opportunity by creating branded products under an online-first model. Our focus on branded offerings like Coppersmith (women’s athleisure) and Brullen (outerwear) caters to evolving consumer preferences.”
“Additionally, we are expanding our export markets, with strategic emphasis on Japan and Russia, particularly in cold-weather clothing. Our unique value proposition and specialization position us for robust growth,” he remarked.
