Saurer Components in India – A success story

Spindles operating at 25,000 rpm for 24 hours a day, seven days a week continuously for 10 years, and manufacturing fine quality Saurer-pic-1yarn. This is typically the life and high quality performance of the components manufactured by Texparts, part of the Saurer Group, at its manufacturing facility at Halol, Gujarat, and all over the world. Texparts is considered the gold standard for quality and performance of components. You don’t just buy a component from Saurer, but you invest in it, says Mr. Daniel Lippuner, CEO, Saurer Group.

The re-established Saurer Group looks back on 160 years of experience in improving production processes at different stages of the textile value chain. Ground-breaking innovations in productivity, product lifetime and service were born out of the passion the company has for its products.

Saurer-pic-2The name Saurer carries a long tradition in setting standards, uniting the spinning brands Saurer Schlafhorst and Saurer Zinser, the twisting brands of Saurer Volkmann and Saurer Allma, Saurer Embroidery and the Saurer components division consisting of the brands Accotex, Daytex, Fibrevision, Heberlein, Temco and Texparts.

From being a manufacturer of textile machineries, Saurer had a strategy to go vertical and integrate first class component brands which has an impact on the quality and productivity of machines. In the 1990s, the company started acquiring some key component brands, and today this constitutes a significant part of the group’s business and future growth strategies. Saurer’s component business has registered a global sales turnover of nearly Euro I billion.

The component group, with its headquarters in Germany, has 10 manufacturing sites worldwide and sales offices in all important regions. At Halol in India, Texparts has a fully equipped plant spread across an area of 2,200 sq.m. to manufacture high-speed spindles and drafting systems for the Indian market. Texparts CS 1 spindles and Texparts PK2000 series weighting arms are suitable for all short staple ring frames installed in India.

Texparts is a 100 per cent supplier of drafting systems to Kirloskar Toyoda Textile Machinery (KTTM). The company has recently Saurer-pic-3developed the hexagonal type drafting systems which are unique to Rieter and LMW machines. These drafting systems have gone through extensive testing at customer sites meeting with very high level of success, says Mr. Lippuner.

Design and technology of the spindles and weighting arms are complimented by the excellent quality with consistency and accuracy. Cross-national teamwork between Germany and India has led to the implementation of a quality control system. In Halol, Mr. Avinash Bapat, General Manager, and his team, have introduced six gates of quality together with 100 per cent on-line quality checks and monitoring of vital machine parameters at the plant.

KTTM, a Toyota Group company, has been according five-star rating year-on-year to Texparts for quality and performance of the product for the past four years. Roadmaps for future business developments are carefully drafted, displayed and monitored and action plans are drawn annually towards continuous advancements at the Halol site. Two strategic elements are products which can withstand the prevailing extremely harsh local environments and second a well-balanced sourcing strategy for individual part sourcing in India and Germany to complement the highly cyclical demand of the Indian market with successful supply chain management.

Spindles

Saurer-pic-4The ring spinning industry has a long tradition in India. The availability of cotton and technical know-how in high quality yarn making has developed the country to one of the world’s top yarn producers. High spindle speeds, fine yarn counts and a highly automated spinning process characterize the Indian spinning industry. The expectations in the Indian market on spindle speed and productivity are among the highest in the world, thus demanding extraordinary performance from spinning components.

Due to the high share of automation in ring spinning in India the quality of the spindles becomes essential for the spinning process. Saurer Components produces complete spindles for high-speed applications. The company’s CS 1 spindle has become the standard for the original equipment of all important ring frame manufacturers all over the world. Due to its outstanding running behaviour and load capacity, the CS 1 spindles are used in a broad range of applications in ring spinning.

Saurer components remain unchallenged concerning the competence of its spindles and drafting systems in the staple fibre market for each and every type of ring frame.

Saurer has global manufacturing capacity of over 2.5 million spindles, including six lakh spindles from its manufacturing facility in India where the spindles are manufactured locally except for the bearing which is being imported from Germany. These bearings are high quality, precision components manufactured using a completely automated process, hence it will continue to be imported.

Drafting systems

Nearly 65 per cent of all weighting arms on ring spinning machines worldwide are either Texparts PK or weighting arms based on the Texparts PK principle. Over 90 per cent of the new ring frames with non-hexagonal (Rieter/LMW) support rods supplied in India are equipped with Texparts weighting arms. In addition to the PK 2025+ series, Saurer Components produces a new series of weighing arms on a fully automated line, the PK 2600 series, in Fellbach, Germany.

Texparts has global capacity to manufacture 2.2 million drafting systems, including the capacity of 200,000 units in the Indian facility. The company targets localization level of 85 per cent on the drafting systems in the next few years.

The PK 2630 used on ring frames with round support rods have already been in the market for a few years and receiving good response. The PK 2630 SEH for ring frames with hexagonal support rods (construed for LMW and Rieter machines) were successfully launched at Indian ITME, 2012. The weighting arm for hexagonal support rod can be exchanged 1:1 with the existing drafting systems in the market. Neither support rod nor the settings need to be changed.

Saurer’s component business will be a significant part of the company’s growth strategy. Saurer has also established its own aftersales service network across the country to service Indian customers both for the machinery and component business. The company will continue to invest in expanding its capacity in India as it views the market as one of its most important growth markets now and in the future.
