Qmilch GmbH of Germany enjoys the rare distinction of having developed a technology to make fibres from milk with a variety of applications.
Qmilk is a textile fibre made of casein concentrate that is extracted from powdered milk. The protein fibres are used as thread that is spun into yarn. When the material is heated, the molecules bond in way that prevents them from breaking down. Casein has extremely high glutamine and calcium content with high industry potential.
In Germany, 1.9 million tons of milk disposed of annually should no longer be marketed or used as food, according to legislation. Qmilch uses this material which is inevitably accrued and extends the product lifecycle. Additionally the manufacturer also pays attention to sustainable animal husbandry of the suppliers.
Qmilk, well-known as the fibre made of white gold, is made on 100 per cent recyclable materials. Because of its technology and special recipe, Qmilch has set new standards in fibre production.
Production of one kg of fibre involves use of two litres of water and duration of five minutes. Materials like silk made from it are odourless and can be laundered in the usual manner. The system ensures cost efficiency and minimum CO2 emission.
The fibre is also used to make beddings and couches. With its anti-bacterial properties, it provides and ideal moisture transport to ensure absolute comfort during sleep.
Anke Domaske, Founder, Qmilch GmbH, Germany, started the company in 2011. Their start was initially not in a lab but in a kitchen, to develop a fibre which is chemically untreated.
Now they have in their group companies like Qmilch IP GmbH, Qmilch Holding GmbH and Qmilch Deutschland GmbH, which are engaged in the production and development of biopolymers based on milk proteins and other natural and renewable raw materials.
Besides the clear environmental advantage, the fibre also has outstanding functional properties for all clothing ranges. Cost-efficient and biodegradable, the fibre is highly comfortable with a silky feel, besides offering a fantastic shine and brightness. The fibre also has a range of applications. The automotive industry is constantly looking out for sustainable materials. The Qmilk fibre is used here for making interiors with 100 per cent recyclable materials.
