In a significant step towards promoting India’s rich handloom heritage, LMW’s Smart Series Machinery has helped the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) to set up a state-of-the-art Eri Silk Spinning Plant at the Integrated Textile Park in Kharuajan, Assam.

This initiative is not only a boost for the traditional textile sector but also a testament to the power of collaboration, as LMW plays a pivotal role in supplying the entire range of spinning machinery for the plant.
Eri Silk Spinning, traditionally rooted in handloom, is now transitioning towards upgrading to LMW’s smart machinery to reduce manual labor and to increase production. LMW’s involvement in silk spinning highlights its versatility beyond conventional cotton and synthetic fibers. By providing advanced spinning machinery to the NEHHDC Eri Silk Spinning Plant in Assam, LMW is playing a key role in scaling up traditional silk production.
Beyond this, LMW’s engagement with silk spinning marks the beginning of a broader exploration into new opportunities in the future worldwide.
A Landmark for Eri Silk Production
Eri silk, often referred to as “peace silk” or “Ahimsa silk,” holds a unique place in India’s textile legacy. Unlike other silk varieties, its production does not harm the pupae, making it a sustainable and eco-friendly fiber. Known for its wool-like texture and isothermal properties, Eri silk offers comfort in both summer and winter, earning its reputation as an all-weather textile.
The newly inaugurated plant, is equipped to produce approximately 450 kilograms of yarn daily, covering both coarse and fine counts in grey and dyed varieties. The machinery line, from Blowroom to Ring Frame, has been supplied by LMW.

Empowering Rural Communities
The Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Pramod Boro, inaugurated the plant. Speaking at the event, he emphasized the transformative potential of this project in strengthening Assam’s rural economy. Special attention was given to creating sustainable livelihoods, particularly for women traditionally involved in Eri silk cultivation.
“The project addresses the challenges in cocoon rearing and the scarcity of modern machinery to meet the increasing demand for Eri yarn,” said Mr. Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR)
The Role of LMW
LMW’s partnership with NEHHDC signifies a forward-thinking approach to enhancing productivity and efficiency in traditional silk spinning. By providing advanced machinery, LMW enables the plant to meet the growing global demand for Eri silk while ensuring the preservation of its unique texture and quality.
The project aligns perfectly with the global push for sustainable and ethical textile production. Eri silk’s eco-friendly properties, combined with advanced manufacturing processes, offer a compelling solution for the conscious consumer.
Looking Ahead
The NEHHDC Eri Silk Spinning Plant is more than just a production facility—it is a symbol of empowerment, sustainability, and innovation. By leveraging LMW’s cutting-edge technology, this initiative is set to position Assam as a hub for high-quality Eri silk production, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity while creating meaningful employment opportunities.
With the world increasingly embracing sustainable textiles, the partnership between NEHHDC and LMW marks a pivotal moment for India’s textile industry, demonstrating how innovation can preserve heritage while paving the way for a brighter, greener future.
