There are 15 centres of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) currently functioning in the country. The Board of Governors of NIFT has just approved the proposal for the establishment of an NIFT centre each in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir.
The Haryana Government has agreed to provide 15 acres of land at Pinjore in Panchkula district and financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 99.71 crores for construction of the complete campus, including buildings for administrative support, academics that will include space for faculty, class rooms, labs, IT facilities, hostels and residential facilities, as well as auditorium. The funds will also be covering the revenue deficits for running the centre for initial three years.
NIFT has initiated preparation of a detailed project report on establishment of NIFT Panchkula.
The J&K State Government has allotted 20 acres of land at Budgam for the NIFT centre which will be ready by 2016. Funds to the tune of Rs. 2.50 crores have been released by the Government which has identified the State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (SIDCO) as its agency for construction of the project. The Ministry of Textiles has agreed to bear 50 per cent of the cost of infrastructure for setting up the centre.
In addition, other States like Punjab, Tripura, Mizoram, Goa and Assam have sent their request for establishing a new NIFT Campus in their respective States. All these proposals have been approved but are still pending for clearance at the State level.
