Indo-US plan to attain $100 billion mutual trade in textiles

The IACC Textile Forum, in association with the US Commercial Service, US Consulate, recently organized a one-day conference in Mumbai on “America First & Make in India: Together Achieving USD 100 Billion Trade in Textiles”.

The objective of the conference was to create, develop and grow bilateral partnership in textiles between the US and India. The conference identified potential areas to expand the scope for trade and promotion of niche sectors in textiles such as apparels, home textiles, technical textiles and textile machinery to enrich each other’s strengths and create enduring partnerships.

In order to promote joint investment and to support favorable trade partnership, there were representations from US Commercial Services and from North Carolina and South Carolina.

The conference brought thought leaders, policy makers, textile stalwarts, and academicians to deliberate and thereby created a road map to deepen trade and investments between the two nations, as well as created textile ethos and ambience which benefits America First and Make in India.

The theme was presented by a prominent business person Mr. Suresh Kotak, Chairman, IACC – Textile Forum. Important messages were given by Consul General Edgard D. Kagan, the Chairman of Welspun, Mr. Balkrishna Goenka, and the President of Reliance, Mr. R.D. Udeshi. The eminent speakers representing companies like Indo Count, Sutlej, Tata Motors, SRTEPC and others deliberated upon various aspects of investment in select States in the US with respect to what does America buy and can buy in textiles, what is the current textile product basket from India, how to expand, diversify and develop and finally success stories of Indo-US bilateral investment in textiles.

The deliberations were guided by the leading textile consultant, Mr. Arvind Sinha, and Mr. Harit Mehta.

The conference was successful in laying the roadmap to achieve $100 billion trade in textiles between the two nations in a decade.
