igus now also offers fully harnessed cables for Single Pair Ethernet technology, especially for use in e-chains.
Single Pair Ethernet is currently one of the biggest trend topics in the field of data communication in order to be able to communicate with even the smallest sensors. In addition to compact connectors, slim cables are also in demand. For this purpose, igus has developed a highly flexible Single Pair Ethernet cable especially for dynamic use in the energy chain, and now also offers it harnessed as a ready-to-connect and tested readycable. To further advance the research of the technology, igus joined the SPE Industrial Partner Network in 2019 and has now received the “PIONEER Member” Award.
Single Pair Ethernet – also known as SPE for short – has been on everyone’s lips since 2019. A lot of hope lies in the new compact data technology, which the industry now wants to harness in order to enable Ethernet-based communication with even the smallest sensors or cameras. One of two networks driving SPE research is the SPE Industrial Partner Network. Together with six other members, connector specialist Harting founded the network in 2019. Shortly afterwards, igus joined as a partner for the dynamic use of cables. The motion plastics specialist has now received the Pioneer Member Award for this collaboration. “We have been working with Harting on various projects for several years. So we also got involved quite early in the development of a Single Pair Ethernet cable that is specially designed for use in the energy chain and is compatible with the Harting T1 connector”, says Andreas Muckes, Head of Product Management chainflex cables at igus GmbH. “We are looking forward to advancing the technology together with many renowned companies and implementing new applications together in the near future.” igus presented the first highly flexible cable for Single Pair Ethernet at SPS 2019.
SPE cable ready to connect immediately
The new cable is precisely designed for the T1 connector interface. The combination of cable and connector is extremely robust: igus uses a highly abrasion-resistant and notch-resistant PUR jacket, and the connector has tough metal latches with a PCB socket. Reducing the size of the cable and connector creates additional space in the e-chain and in the connecting area of the control system. The oil-resistant and flame-retardant CFBUS.PUR.042 has been extensively tested in the 3,800 square metre igus test laboratory. As with all more than 1,300 chainflex cables, the user also receives a guarantee of up to 36 months for the Single Pair Ethernet cable. So that customers do not have to buy and harness connectors and cables separately, the chainflex cable is not only available as sold by the metre, but also as a ready-to-connect and tested readycable in the igus online shop. In the meantime, there are other connector options for SPE on the market, which should enable various customer requirements. “Therefore, we also test our SPE cable with other connectors in order to be able to offer the customer the optimal solution for their requirements”, explains Andreas Muckes.
