Brazil is starting its first international event for the 2024-25 commercial year in India. The Cotton Brazil Outlook seminar will take place this Friday, September 13th, at The LaLit, New Delhi from 10 a.m. onwards. The seminar, promoted by Cotton Brazil, will be held in India for the first time in person and will target business leaders, investors, and government officials involved in the Indian textile industry.
Cotton Brazil is an initiative by the Brazilian Cotton Growers Association (Abrapa) aimed at promoting Brazilian cotton on a global scale. It is partnered with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) and supported by the National Cotton Exporters Association (Anea).
India, the second-largest cotton consumer in the world, is one of Brazil’s priority markets. One of the goals of the Cotton Brazil Outlook is to showcase how Brazilian cotton can enhance the competitiveness of the Indian textile industry globally, offering high-quality products at attractive prices.
“In recent years, we have expanded our presence in the international market with cotton grown with social and environmental responsibility. Over 80% of our crop is socio-environmentally certified and of high quality. It’s contamination-free fiber and 100% traceable,” said Abrapa’s president, Alexandre Schenkel.
In the 2023-24 commercial year, which ended in July, Brazil claimed the top spot for the first time as the world’s largest cotton exporter, surpassing the United States. The South American country is also recognized for producing 37% of the global supply of Better Cotton certified cotton.
However, Brazilian cotton only accounts for 5% of the robust Indian market. From August 2023 to July 2024, India imported 8.09 thousand tons of Brazilian cotton—less than half the volume from the previous cycle (16.5 thousand tons). In the 2021-22 cycle, imports reached 21.8 thousand tons. The highest volume of cotton traded between India and Brazil occurred in 2001-02, with 34.1 thousand tons. In 2019-20, the volume was 32.4 thousand tons.
During the seminar, the current status of the 2024-25 crop in Brazilian fields will be presented. Export projections, key indicators, and trends will also be discussed. In addition to Abrapa executives, Anea’s president, Miguel Faus, will participate in the event.
The Cotton Brazil Outlook is an invitation-only seminar and includes a Q&A session. The event is organized by Cotton Brazil with the support of the Brazilian Embassy in New Delhi and in partnership with Wazir Advisors.
